Like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon eventually went multiformat but by then the formula had already been stretched too thin and the franchise lay dormant until Spyro became the mascot for toys to life franchise Skylanders. Crash Bandicoot was the first big hit from Uncharted and The Last Of Us developer Naughty Dog, while Spyro The Dragon holds a similar position in the gameography of Insomniac – creators of Ratchet & Clank and the recent Marvel’s Spider-Man. One of the fascinating things about both remake collections is that they recreate the early work of what are now two of America’s most celebrated developers. The real question is whether the games actually deserve this level of attention… Sane Trilogy turned out it’s not surprising to find out that in terms of recreating all three original Spyro The Dragon games this does extremely well. Whenever reviewing a remake there’s two very separate issues to consider: the quality of the makeover and the quality of the original game which is being remade.
